About Malaysia

Malaysia is a federation of 13 states and three federal territories spread across Peninsular and East Malaysia, totalling 330,803 square kilometres and home to more than 34 million people. UNData places the country's population growth in a moderate but steady band, supported by relatively young demographics alongside one of Southeast Asia's most rapidly ageing populations. Bahasa Melayu is the national language, while English, Mandarin, Tamil, and various Indigenous and Bornean languages thrive in daily life. The federal capital Kuala Lumpur and the adjacent administrative capital Putrajaya anchor the country's economy, with key exports including palm oil, electronics, liquefied natural gas, and Islamic financial services. Malaysia is home to significant Bornean rainforests in Sarawak and Sabah, where orang-utans, pygmy elephants, and biodiverse coral islands draw conservation attention. The country is a founding member of ASEAN, OIC, and the Commonwealth, and plays an active role in moderating regional diplomacy. Malaysian civil society is active — covering refugee rights, environmental defence, labour migration, and Islamic social finance — even as recent political shifts have narrowed space for some advocacy. Solidarity opportunities range from Borneo wildlife conservation to refugee resettlement support and post-flood community rebuilding in the east coast.
