Indigenous Communities across Republic of Indonesia

Dayak, Karen, Igorot, hill tribe rights, and ethnic minority solidarity.

ASEAN is home to hundreds of Indigenous and ethnic minority communities — Dayak in Borneo, Karen and Shan in Myanmar and Thailand, Igorot and Lumad in the Philippines, Hmong in Laos and Vietnam, Mangyan in Mindoro, and many smaller groups. These communities steward significant forest and watershed territories but face pressures from extractive industries and conservation projects that exclude them. Solidarity work centres Indigenous leadership: community-based conservation, ethnic-language education, traditional knowledge preservation, and advocacy for free, prior, and informed consent. The Seablings approach follows Indigenous organisations themselves — supporting Karen weaving collectives in Thailand, Lumad schools in Mindanao, and Dayak cultural centres in Kalimantan. Indigenous solidarity is also climate solidarity.
